How the idea was born

The idea of creating a board game was born in Slovakia. Time spent with friends and family is important for each of us. We tend to spend that time playing board games that turn this time into fun.

The first spark for creating the Gomopong board game, was our own experience with the game, but in a different presentation. The playing field consisted of an egg carton (a sheet of 30 pieces), into which white and orange ping-pong balls were placed by bouncing them from a solid mat onto the playing field.

The game in this presentation was very fun, but the makeshift playing field had several shortcomings. First, it was not large enough and when placing the balls, they bounced outside the playing field. The egg carton itself in combination with the white and orange balls was not exactly an eye-catching element. In addition, it also wore out easily.

And this is what led us to think about and create a new playing field that would not only eliminate the aforementioned shortcomings, but also create a more eye-catching design. The key for us was to create a playing field that would not only be stylish but also environmentally friendly.

Packaging

The packaging of the Gomopong game itself is made of cardboard. It consists of two parts - the top and bottom.

The cardboard of the prototype is without additional surface treatment, we also work with an alternative additional surface protection of the cardboard. Each part is made of a double layer of the aforementioned cardboard with a bend. This ensures greater stability and at the same time a longer lifespan. The bends of the double layers limit the occurrence of unprotected parts of the cardboard, which are more susceptible to damage during handling.

The top and bottom of the package have a so-called double bottom to ensure better resistance of these parts.

Playing field

The playing field is made of cardboard, which is folded without the use of glue with regard to recycling and ecology. The dimensions of each part of the playing field are based on the size of a ping-pong ball, i.e. a diameter of 4 centimeters.

The playing field has 36 cells (holes), located in a 6x6 grid, which allows movement in any direction when creating the necessary line of 5 balls. (vertical, horizontal and diagonal).

There is a space around the perimeter of the playing field that serves to catch balls that have not been placed on the playing field. At the same time, this space forms an obstacle when placing the ball by bouncing it off the mat.

Raised side rails serve to catch balls on the playing field. The bevels of the dividing parts prevent the ball from bouncing back onto the playing field. Circular holes in the playing field serve to better catch the ball and also to stabilize it after placing it on the playing field.

The difficulty of placing the ball by bouncing it off a solid mat depends on the size of the playing field and also on the height and size of the hole in the playing field.

There are 2 ball trays on the playing field in the package. Each tray contains 18 balls. After each player places them, the entire playing field is filled.

The trays are stabilized by a piece that ensures their exact position in the package. This piece is placed on top of the playing field.

Printing

All parts of the packaging as well as the playing field are unprinted.

The necessary information is printed on separate cards, which are inserted into the upper part directly into the holes when folding it. This ensures that the information data can be changed without interfering with the individual parts of the packaging.

Design

The resulting design is based on broad pillars - recyclability, minimalism, ecology and natural appearance. The top of the package contains the name gomopong, which is made by die-cutting. In addition, there are holes on the top of the package through which the balls in the containers are visible.

The different placement of the balls in the containers creates the visual of the game packaging itself.

There are 4 pairs of circular holes on the sides of the top of the package. 2 pairs of holes on the sides are used to open the package. The remaining 2 pairs of holes serve as the basic parameters of the board game. The sizes of the individual holes and other parts are adapted for production by die-cutting.

The first paragraph describes additional details about the design and its advantages.

The second paragraph provides information about the materials used in the production.

The third paragraph emphasizes the ecological aspects and sustainability.

The fourth paragraph summarizes the main points and benefits of the design.

Goal of the game

Game Setup

Remove the ball trays along with the dividers that held the trays.
Arrange the balls in the trays so that each tray contains one color of ball.
Place the playing board in the middle of the table.
Turn the playing board so that the cutouts on the sides are directly in front of you.
Each player takes 1 ball tray.

Start and progress of the game

Take one ball in each hand in both colors and hide it behind your back.
The second player chooses a hand. The player whose ball was revealed by the second player starts the game.

Take a ball from the tray and try to place it on the playing field by bouncing it off the table.
Place the balls on the playing field in this way throughout the game.

If a player bounces balls outside the 6x6 playing field during the game, these balls are still in play and the player can take them and play with them again. However, be vigilant during the game and try not only to place the balls, but also to prevent the opponent from placing their balls vertically, horizontally or diagonally on the playing field.

End of the game

The game ends when one of the players manages to place 5 balls next to each other or behind each other vertically, horizontally or diagonally on the playing field.

The game also ends if none of the players manages to place their balls vertically, horizontally or diagonally on the playing field. In this case, there is no winner and you can repeat the game.

Attention:

if a player has placed 5 balls horizontally in the first row of the playing field, in this case the game still continues.

Comparison with existing competition

There is currently an arcade family game on the market - Bounce ball party, which at first glance may resemble gomopong, but when compared, we find that these are two different games.
